Have you ever felt that rush of excitement when you won a deal, got a sale or gained a new contract? That great sense of feeling rewarded for your efforts? Additionally, you can probably remember the opposite feeling that occurs when you lose a sale or miss out on an important deal? Equally, that deflated feeling that can lead to a lack of motivation, diminishing of self worth and questioning your abilities.
If you are in sales, and we all are at some level, you will know what I am talking about. In other words, you know personally the highs and lows of being in sales. Furthermore, while it’s easy to feel inspired and motivated when things are going well, how do you keep going when you face disappointments and losses? In worst case instances, it can sabotage sales success as you avoid feeling rejection; a feeling that we are hard-wired to avoid at all cost. Consequently, here is a simple method to ensure you are always feeling rewarded in life and are programming your mind with winning strategies.
Many years ago, on a personal development course, I remember being taught about the four currencies in life. Moreover, the currencies all begin with the letter G. Over time, I have added a fifth one, which will ensure you are always feeling rewarded in life.
The Four Currencies that will ensure you are feeling rewarded in life
The first of the four currencies that together, help you create good energy habits is, get.
Get money
This is the simple currency related to cash. The reward is money in exchange for services and products. Equally important, when you lose a sale or are not having an exchange with money, it is helpful to find other ways for feeling rewarded.
2. Give generously to increase a sense of feeling rewarded
You can always give someone the gift of your services, time, expertise or products for free, from a generous heart space with no expectation of getting anything in return. I am sure you have done this in your business and life? The reward is feeling great and knowing you have helped others feel good too. Sometimes, giving is even better than receiving money! As long as you can connect with the generous feeling of giving to someone else knowing it will make a difference, you have an energy equal to or even greater than money.
3. Gain knowledge and find the gift
If you ever give your time or expertise and feel it is not appreciated, remember you can turn the currency inwards. Simply ask yourself what did you learn from the experience? There is always something to take out of an experience. Furthermore, finding the gift, the insight or learning that you can embody and leverage off in the future again is another way of building appreciation of yourself. When I first started coaching many years ago and desired to become a speaker, I often spoke for free. I knew I would be gaining experience, building my muscle of confidence and improving every time.
4. Grow is the fourth currency to help feeling rewarded
In this example of currency, we are talking about growing your network, relationships or database. Similar to planting seeds for the long term and waiting patiently while they sprout in the future. I know in my business I have had people contact me months and even years after we first connected. They remember me and are now ready to work with me or refer me to someone who is.
5. The fifth currency that tops them all is gratitude
I added in a fifth currency to the above. This currency is gratitude. Furthermore, when you are truly grateful and appreciative of what you have, for the opportunity to learn and grow, you will always feel rewarded and appreciated. Gratitude helps remove negative feelings of need, lack or scarcity. Moreover, cultivating a habit of feeling gratitude means you are in the right place for receiving more.
Next time you lose a sale, feel like you wasted time or weren’t appreciated, remember to check the above currencies. Decide which one you will pay yourself with. Moreover, try expanding your perspective and see how you can be paid in more than one currency, or all five. When you do, you will never feel that pain of loss again.
This simple tip has the potential to transform the way you view the world. Furthermore, when you master this in terms of sales, practice taking these currencies into your relationships. How often do you do something with an expectation of getting something in return? When you don’t get what you want, how do you feel? Now imagine you are giving with no expectation. It changes everything, doesn’t it? Try it out for yourself and check you are feeling rewarded for your efforts.
