About a year ago, Eliud Kipchoge, a marathon runner set out to have another attempt at running a marathon in under two hours. Something that for many people is way out of their comfort zone? Furthermore, if you aren’t a runner it probably holds no desire or interest? I am a runner, however, this type of speed and time is certainly in another league to my running. It leaves me with an incredible admiration for endurance runners who can sustain such speeds over this distance. However, the important lesson here is not really about your running abilities or desire to break a marathon record. It’s more about what lies beyond your comfort zone? What possibilities and successes and opportunities are there? What else could you achieve in life if you stepped beyond out of your comfort zone more often, and do you regularly challenge yourself? Finally, how can you ensure you work toward creating your own mindset for success.
“Personally, I don’t believe in limits. My mind was clear. From the first kilometre to the last kilometere, I knew I had it.” Eliud Kipchoge
Breaking the boundaries of what you think is possible
Eliud Kipchoge completed the marathon in under two hours. An amazing accomplishment, even if his time wasn’t an official world record as he didn’t run in race conditions. Furthermore, he had belief. He thought and acted outside his comfort zone. He had the right mindset, a plan, a strategy and a team to support him (and some pretty cool gear!) Moreover, the right mindset is partly about the unshakeable belief he had in his abilities to achieve this success.
“I’m sending a message to every individual in this world, that when you work hard, when you actually concentrate, when you set your priorities high, when you actually set your goals, and put them in your heart and in your mind, you will accomplish, without any question.” Eliud Kipchoge
What lies the other side of your comfort zone?
If you need more proof of what is possible, remember back to the days before Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile? Even his coach thought it impossible and others thought that his heart might explode!
Just 46 days later, John Landy broke this record. Furthermore, it is the new benchmark and over 1490 people have achieved this. So I challenge you to ask yourself a couple of questions. What could you achieve if you didn’t let your invisible barriers and beliefs hold you back? Do you think your world might open up to new and exciting possibilities? Whether it be in business, personal life, physical challenges, relationships or health? What could be possible?
With a plan, the right mindset and determination there are amazing gifts the other side of your comfort zone.
Take a few minutes and jot down all the things you might have thought about doing but delayed. What about those things that scare you a bit? Perhaps you have a secret desire to achieve something yet haven’t shared it with anyone else? And of course the one thing that would really push you outside your comfort zone. You see we are creatures of habit. We have a tendency to fall back into what is comfortable, whether or not we feel fulfilled. So the key is to step outside this zone often and work on creating vital habits.
We operate by habit anything from forty-five to ninety-five percent of our day. What this means is we operate on old thought patterns and behavioural habits that don’t necessarily lead us to the success we desire. However, growth only ever happens outside our comfort zone. And this always involves some level of discomfort, doubt or fear. which is why many people never move out of theirs.
Pick one challenge, whether big or small and commit to working towards it. This will help you train yourself to step out of your comfort zone and will build belief, mental toughness and confidence. Whatever you pick make sure you have a plan and find a way to stick to it.
Desire, belief, commitment and determination are essential ingredients for success
Remember you need belief, determination, a plan, commitment and a desire. Furthermore, discipline and sticking to doing the things you say you will do is important. Moreover, it helps to program your subconscious mind correctly and steer yourself towards destination success. To finish in the words of Eliud, “When you set your goals and put them in your heart and mind you will accomplish them.” Humans are amazing creatures. We all have far more potential than we believe and are far stronger than we think. It’s simply a case of whether in our hearts and minds we believe we can do it. Whether we have the desire and passion to go for it. And finally, whether we have the courage to take action and step outside our comfort zone. In conclusion, those are all the ingredients of a champion.
