To answer the question, what is a high performance mindset, we must first understand that it is your mindset that shapes everything. It influences how you think, how you respond under pressure, and ultimately, the results you create in your business and life. Yet many people focus only on strategies or actions, without understanding the mental patterns driving them.
A high performance mindset is what separates those who stay stuck in cycles of inconsistency from those who create sustainable success over time. It’s not about pushing harder or doing more. Instead, it’s about thinking differently, managing your energy, and aligning your actions with what truly matters. At its core, a high performance mindset is built on three key elements:
Clarity — knowing who you are, what you want, and why it matters
Consistency — taking aligned action, even when it’s uncomfortable
Impact — creating meaningful results that extend beyond yourself
Before we explore the key traits, there is one principle that underpins all high performers.
Control What You Can Control
In high-pressure environments, it’s easy to become distracted by things outside your influence. However, high performers develop the discipline to focus on what they can control — their thoughts, actions, effort, and response. This principle is often referred to as controlling the controllables.
When you shift your attention away from external noise and back onto your own actions, you regain clarity, reduce stress, and move forward with purpose. This is where a high performance mindset begins.

The Hidden Edge: Self-Awareness and Alignment
1. Curiosity and Passion Drive Growth
A high performance mindset starts with curiosity. High performers don’t assume they have all the answers. Instead, they ask better questions, challenge their thinking, and remain open to new perspectives.
Passion fuels this curiosity. It creates the energy and drive required to persist when things become difficult. When you are clear on what matters to you, your motivation becomes internal — not dependent on external validation. As Anatole France wisely said:
“The greatest virtue of man is perhaps curiosity.”
2. Focus Shapes a High Performance Mindset
In a world full of distractions, focus has become a competitive advantage. Where you place your attention determines what your mind reinforces. I often see this with clients who feel busy but not progressing. Their attention is pulled in multiple directions, leaving them mentally drained but without meaningful movement. When they learn to focus on what truly matters, everything begins to shift.
High performers train their minds to stay focused on what matters most, rather than reacting to constant noise. This is why many refer to attention as the currency of high achievement. When your focus is intentional, your actions become more effective and your results more consistent. Additionally, your focus on how you set goals and how connected you are to them, is key.
3. Grit Builds Self-Belief and Resilience
A high performance mindset is not built when things are easy. It is built in the moments when you feel challenged, uncertain, or stretched beyond your comfort zone. This is where grit becomes essential. Grit is the combination of perseverance, discipline, and self-belief — the ability to keep going, even when progress feels slow or obstacles arise.
However, grit is often misunderstood. It is not about pushing endlessly or ignoring how you feel. Instead, it’s about staying committed to what matters, while continuing to move forward with intention. At its core, grit is fuelled by self-belief. When you believe in your ability to adapt, learn, and grow, you are far more likely to take action — even when the outcome is uncertain.
A living example of grit in action
One of my clients, Claire, is a great example of this in action. Claire is a surgeon who was navigating the demands of building her private practice while also pursuing her passion for ultra-endurance racing. When we first worked together, she was stretched — balancing high expectations, long hours, and a desire to keep pushing her limits.
Rather than pulling back, Claire chose to lean into the challenge with intention. She developed structure in her schedule, strengthened her mindset, and committed to consistent action — even when it was uncomfortable.
Recently, she competed in the Silk Road Mountain Race, an unsupported endurance event through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. What makes this even more remarkable is that she had never trained or competed at high altitude before. She didn’t rely on perfect conditions. She relied on preparation, belief, and the ability to keep moving forward.
That is grit. Grit is not about doing more. It’s about staying committed to what matters — especially when it’s hard. Over time, this builds confidence, resilience, and a stronger sense of identity. And this is what shapes a true high performance mindset. If you want to explore this further, you can read more about developing grit and building resilience over time.
4. Emotional Mastery Is An Essential Ingredient of a High Performance Mindset
High performers don’t eliminate emotions — they learn to manage them. They understand that emotions can either support or sabotage performance. Emotional mastery allows you to:
stay composed under pressure
respond rather than react
maintain clarity in challenging situations
This level of control creates consistency, even when circumstances are unpredictable.
Many high-achieving professionals I work with don’t struggle with capability — they struggle with internal pressure. Learning to manage that pressure, rather than be driven by it, is often the turning point.
5. Continual Growth Expands What’s Possible
A high performance mindset is rooted in growth.
Rather than fearing failure, high performers see it as feedback.
They reflect, refine, and adjust their approach continuously.
This commitment to growth ensures they are always evolving, learning, and improving — regardless of external conditions.
Many high performers, including elite military units like Navy SEALs, operate with this mindset. They embrace discomfort, seek constant improvement, and view challenges as part of the process rather than something to avoid. You can explore this further in these lessons from high performers operating under extreme pressure.
6. Energy Management Sustains Results and Fuels a High Performance Mindset
Performance is not just about time — it’s about energy. This is something I see often. High performers try to push through fatigue, believing more effort is the answer, when in reality, better energy management would create far better results.
High performers understand when to push and when to recover.
They prioritise:
sleep and recovery
physical movement
mental reset
emotional balance
By managing energy effectively, they avoid burnout and maintain long-term performance.
7. Incremental Improvements Create Lasting Results
Success is rarely the result of one big moment. Instead, it comes from consistent, small improvements over time.
A high performance mindset focuses on progress, not perfection. Many people wait until they feel ready or motivated before they act. High performers understand that small, consistent steps create momentum — and momentum creates confidence. They embrace the discipline of consistency, and act whether or not they feel like it.
When you improve even slightly each day, those gains compound into significant results. This is how sustainable success is built.
8. The Hidden Edge to a High Performance Mindset: Self-Awareness and Alignment
The most overlooked element of a high performance mindset is self-awareness. High performers understand:
how they think
what drives them
what holds them back
They align their actions with their values, rather than reacting unconsciously. This creates a sense of clarity, confidence, and control that supports consistent performance.
A high performance mindset is not something you are born with. It is something you develop. By focusing on what you can control, strengthening these core traits, and taking consistent action, you begin to reshape how you think, act, and perform. Over time, this creates not just better results — but a stronger, more resilient version of yourself, and a wonderful example of programming your subconscious mind for success.
