We all know achieving our goals requires us to change, and you have probably noticed that change is often hard. Most of us are searching for the secret formula for success. (Photos courtesy of Shutterstock). However, I believe we all desire to become better humans. To live life fully, discover our potential, perform at our peak, be a better partner, parent or friend.
The likelihood of this happening though is not great. Furthermore, while you may start off feeling inspired and doing better behaviours, the likelihood of sticking with it is slim. Next year it is highly likely you are doing the same behaviour rather than doing the new one with ease.
In the words of Einstein,
‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.’
Another interpretation involves us shaking up the old way of living and changing the way we view life. This means to change the old equation of Have + Do = Be for a new one.
This equation translates to statements like ‘When I HAVE lost ten kilos (DO) I will BE happy’, or ‘When I have finished my work I will make time for me, and relax.’
The Secret Formula For Success
I believe a better way to achieve success is to reverse the equation to BE + DO = HAVE. This is the modern day secret formula for success
The key here is to be the person you desire to be. Your current behaviours are a reflection of your current identity. And what you do now is a reflection of the type of person you believe you are, whether consciously or subconsciously. Success in goals comes from creating new behaviours, and building lasting habits.
To create new lasting habits and behaviours, instead of imagining the hardship of working out in a gym five days a week, start believing new things about yourself. The first step is to create a new narrative that you tell yourself.
Focus on your identity
Think about losing weight. The above statement, “When I have lost ten kilos … is centred around the outcome or appearance. But the key is, what type of behaviours would this person be doing? When you include the creation of new behaviours, you create a new identity around these behaviours. Claim the new you. ‘I am the type of person who exercises daily.’ ‘I am the type of person who eats healthy food.’
If you want to become a blogger become the type of person who writes every day. Start small: Write 100 words each day this week.
To become more organised at work, become the type of person who plans and prioritises every morning. Start small: Spend five minutes each morning planning.
It is critical to take small steps. To build momentum and belief. Most importantly, to prove to yourself that you are the sort of person who can do this. This is your secret formula for success.
If you want to embrace exercise into your life. Start small. Make a plan to exercise for ten minutes before you go to work. If you do this five times in the first week you have a small win. Add in five minutes the next week and five the following. In one month you will be walking 25 minutes five times a week. Over the long term, this compounds into something greater.
Claim your identity
The key point here is when we embark on a program of change, it is critical to prove to ourselves that we can do it. What this means, is it important to remember the foundations. Your identity and the person you believe you are.
It means you have to trust in the process rather than the outcome. Start small, acknowledge your success and the results will come as you develop a new identity. To start being that new you is the focus of your shift.
I challenge you to try this secret formula for success yourself. Start now and become the type of person who will achieve the goals you want to achieve. Be that person and do that small behaviour consistently. This means you are more likely to create lasting habits. If you do this, the results will come to you.
