Why do we keep repeating the same behaviours? This question, and the many variations of it, has sat at the heart of much of my work with clients over the past two decades. If I’m honest, they are questions I used to ask myself many years ago. I thought I must be weird, flawed or broken and that this was unique to me. Little did I know that this is a question that many people ask themselves, especially those striving to create a high performance mindset. In this article I’ll explain why it’s such a common question and help you see you are not alone. I’ll also share the first step towards changing behaviours.
First, Let’s Explore the Other Variants of This Question That Keep Us Stuck
- Why do I keep procrastinating when I know exactly what I need to do?
- How come I keep saying “yes” when I really want to say “no”?
- Why do I keep putting everyone else first?
- What is wrong with me that I just cannot stick to my new plan so it becomes habitual?
- Why do I keep falling back into old habits, even when I’m determined to change?
If you’ve ever found yourself asking one of these questions, especially “Why do we keep repeating the same behaviours?”, realise it’s a question many other people ask. Furthermore, the answer rarely lies in more discipline, rigidity, punishment or berating yourself wildly. It often lies beneath the surface, where you cannot see it.
Today, I understand this completely, and I see things very differently. You see, we tend to promise ourselves we’ll stop procrastinating, or we’ll exercise consistently. Sometimes, we promise ourselves we’ll be more confident, stop people pleasing, or finally have that difficult conversation. However, imagine for a moment that your behaviour isn’t the real problem. Understand it’s what’s actually driving that behaviour.
Why Do We Keep Repeating the Same Behaviours?
As I mentioned earlier, the behaviour is often only the symptom. The real cause usually sits beneath the surface, hidden from sight. They are what I refer to as invisible patterns. So, what exactly is an Invisible Pattern?
An invisible pattern is an unconscious belief, emotion or automatic way of responding that quietly shapes your behaviour without you even realising it. It influences how you think, feel and act, and often explains why you keep repeating behaviours, even when you genuinely want a different outcome.
The key word is invisible because you can’t see it. It’s like a blind spot. If you could already see the pattern, you might understand why and how it drives your behaviours or holds you back.
How Do Invisible Patterns Operate?
Instead, Invisible Patterns operate quietly in the background, influencing your decisions long before your conscious mind catches up.
They often begin as a way of protecting us, and, from when we were young. They influence our choices, shape our decisions and drive our behaviours. Perhaps you learnt that being responsible earned approval? So you became dependable or reliable, or put everyone else first because of this belief. You live up to the perception of being the person everyone can count on.
Years later, that same pattern may leave you feeling overwhelmed because you struggle to say no. Maybe you grew up believing mistakes weren’t acceptable. Now, perfectionism convinces you that unless something can be done exceptionally well, it’s safer not to begin.
On the Surface, it Looks Like Procrastination
Beneath the surface, your mind may simply be trying to protect you from disappointment, criticism or failure. And this is where I believe we need to pause for a moment. One of the biggest myths in personal development is that our unwanted behaviours are signs of weakness. I don’t believe that. Many of the patterns we develop made perfect sense at the time.
Remember; the behaviour isn’t random. It’s serving a purpose.
My Own Turning Point To Answer The Question Why Do We Keep Repeating the Same Behaviours
For many years, I was driven by achievement and responsibility. From the outside, life looked successful. Inside, however, I was constantly striving, taking on responsibility and pushing myself harder. Eventually, my body began to tell me something my mind had been ignoring. It wasn’t until my body broke down and I had to give up my beloved sport that a completely new path began to emerge. My quest to heal myself led me to learn about invisible patterns.
One of the experts I saw on my healing journey told me I had a responsibility and loyalty pattern influencing my decisions and behaviours, and had led me to be where I was then. I became fascinated, because I could not see or touch these patterns. Furthermore, I had no idea I had any invisible patterns, let alone how powerful they were in shaping my life. As I explored more, I experienced several lightbulb moments.
I realised many of my own behaviours weren’t simply personality traits. They were driven by these old patterns and were shaping my choices and behaviours. It helped me understand the answer to this question; “Why do we keep repeating the same behaviours?”
It’s because we all have powerful, Invisible Patterns. While my drivers helped me accomplish a great deal, and never quit on others, they were also quietly limiting me. The more I explored, the deeper I went. Ultimately, this journey led me to study human behaviour, neuroscience and NLP. It didn’t just change my life, it was the catalyst for leaving a great career in travel and setting up my business, Mindset for Success.
Why Capable People Often Ask Why Do We Keep Repeating the Same Behaviours
One of the reasons I love working with high achievers, and those dedicated to developing a high performance mindset, is that they usually know exactly what they should be doing, and they are motivated to learn and grow. They’ve read the books, listened to podcasts, attended the seminars. Furthermore, they understand what success requires. Yet they still find themselves repeating the same behaviours, which causes them to feel frustrated and stops them from fulfilling their potential.
I often say:
“Do you think you need more information?”
In this world of information at your fingertips, if you did, don’t you think you would have figured it out by now? What is vital, is to have a greater level of awareness.
Information creates awareness. Awareness creates choice. And choice opens the door to change.
Embrace An Attitude Of Curiosity And Kindness
An essential first step is to embrace a mindset of curiosity and kindness. This is because one of the biggest traits I see in my clients is their ability to be hard on themselves, exactly as I used to be. It’s also one of the reasons that around my central model in my book, REWIRE, you will see curiosity and kindness, along with intention and attention. Curiosity is a high-performance energy which opens the door to possibility and potential, rather than diminishing your power and staying stuck.
The next time you catch yourself repeating a behaviour you’d like to change, instead of berating yourself or asking:
“What’s wrong with me?”
Ask:
“What might this behaviour be trying to protect me from?”
Or…
“What Invisible Pattern could be driving this?”
Understanding often leads to awareness. And awareness creates choice, opening the door to change.
Take a moment to think about one area of your life where you know exactly what you should be doing, yet you continue to do something different. It might be your health, your business, relationships, confidence or finances.
Become curious
What if there is something deeper driving the behaviour? An Invisible Pattern you’ve never noticed before? Sometimes the greatest breakthroughs don’t come from trying harder. They come from finally seeing what has been there all along.
Before you judge yourself, pause, be curious and ask:
“What Invisible Pattern could be driving this?”
