Do you ever find yourself struggling to ask for help in overcoming challenges? It’s a fact that many high performers face this dilemma, feeling uncomfortable asking for support despite appearing strong and confident on the outside. Inwardly, it’s common to have doubts and insecurities, creating a low level of anxiety and stress which becomes normal. Furthermore, it creates a relentless drive to achieve. This make losing one’s edge even more daunting. Confidence is eroded as feelings of unfamiliarity and uncertainty take hold. Consequently, it’s important to find a winning way to get back on track. A way that does not increase stress, expectations or returning too quickly. Olympic Gold medalist Michael Johnson’s story of his return leaves some clues, and I have programs to help you build inner confidence.
The fastest man was reduced to one of the slowest
Once the fastest man on the planet with four Olympic Gold medals, in 2018 Johnson suffered a stroke, rendering him unable to walk, let alone run. Stripped of his identity and feeling bewildered, he found himself at the start of a long road to recovery. He had a massive mission; to overcome his challenges and walk again.
Drawing on his Olympic Mindset, a mindset of determination, courage, curiosity and a relentless focus on incremental improvements, with the support of his family, therapist and a walking frame, he set out to learn to walk again.
Athletes also struggle with motivation when overcoming challenges
Even athletes struggle with motivation and starting again from an unfamiliar starting line. In relation to his journey, Michael states:
“This has been really hard. People think that being an athlete means motivation is always easy, but that isn’t true. It becomes more difficult. There were no medals and no people cheering, just my wife and my dog and my son. I wasn’t comfortable not being the strong self-sufficient man, the man people could rely on.” Michael Johnson
A year later, Johnson successfully returned to running. He attributes his recovery to his Olympic Mindset and external support which offers valuable lessons for us all.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGING TIMES
Here are three ways to help you overcoming challenges
If you tend to do it alone, accept that you may feel vulnerable asking for help. It’s simply unfamiliar. Moreover, asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s an act of courage. In the current landscape of economic uncertainty, conflicts and geopolitical unrest, seeking support and collaboration is essential for for navigating challenges effectively.
“Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.” Brenee Brown
2. Lower the bar
When overcoming challenges, adjust expectations. Instead of fretting over where you once were, start from where you are now. Lower the bar. This strategy mirrors dolphins training. Each time they clear a bar or hoop, they get a fish as a reward, and the bar goes up slightly. However, if they miss, the bar is lowered and patiently, diligently and consistently, the trainer starts the process again. The end result? Flawless and mesmerising performances.
3. Be kind to yourself
If you are driven to achieve, being hard on yourself may be the norm. Stop it now! Show yourself some kindness, appreciation, and acknowledge your small achievements. Moreover, this will help you stay present and trains your mind to see what you would normally overlook. Furthermore, it builds confidence and momentum.
Navigating today’s changing world and overcoming challenges can be tough. Remember, other people see us differently and can shed new light on our situation. Seek support so you too can gain insights, shift your mindset and open up space for new possibilities and to move forward once more.
