One essential habit to cultivate, and one we all need more than ever, is the habit of genuine human connection. Moreover, in today’s world, we’re not just recovering from a global health crisis; we’re facing a growing loneliness epidemic. The deep sense of disconnection many are experiencing has become one of the biggest threats to our well-being and fabric of society.
Connection isn’t a luxury. It’s a vital ingredient for a healthy, fulfilling life. Whether it’s connecting with others, feeling aligned with ourselves, or spending mindful time in nature, this need for connection is fundamental. Even before the pandemic, we were already seeing the effects of growing reliance on technology via our gadgets, over face-to-face interactions. Now, the challenge has only intensified.
The past few years of lockdowns, reduced travel, and limited gatherings have taken their toll. Families and friends were kept apart. Loneliness, already on the rise, is now a serious global concern. Prolonged social isolation, a known health risk, has become all too common. In fact, solitary confinement remains one of the harshest punishments used in prisons, and for good reason: it hurts us on every level.
Social isolation has been linked to health problems, heart disease, depression and cognitive decline
A focused effort is required to ensure we take steps to counteract loneliness and further damage to our mental health, wellbeing and self-esteem. Not only for ourselves and others, but for the sake of society and the health and robustness of our businesses.
Here are four simple yet powerful steps you can take right now:
One essential habit is to make time to connect with people whose company you enjoy
1. Schedule more time for genuine connection. Plan a date night with your partner, a catch up with friends, or a family outing. Yes, it takes a bit of effort, yet, it’s worth it. Connection lifts and is helpful for your mindset. Furthermore, it boosts self-esteem, builds empathy and strengthens your immune system. Joining a group in an area of interest, such as sports, art, dance or books helps you keep the commitment. Consistent commitment build rituals and creates a sense of belonging, connection and certainty. Finally, rituals are easier to create when you have a plan to help create new habits.
Random acts of kindness benefit the giver and receiver and are an essential habit to build
2. Step out and make someone’s day. Whether it’s a kind smile, buying a coffee for the next person or topping up a parking meter (if you can find one that still takes coins!) The simple act of helping another person helps you feel good, and the recipient. Make it an essential habit to cultivate. When I go out for my morning run, which is one of my keystone habits, I see a wonderful older lady out walking frequently. She says hello to everyone she meets, smiles at them and wishes them a beautiful day. This small act of kindness ripples out and can impact people in powerfully positive ways.
3. Connect with nature. It’s one of our greatest free resources; it’s a healer, a peace-giver, and a wise teacher. Time spent outdoors is an essential habit to cultivate. It restores clarity, calm and connection to self. Finally, leave your gadgets behind and let yourself soak in the full power of nature; sights, sounds and stillness.
Invest in your greatest asset – you – and get to know more about who you are
4. There’s no better time to focus inward. You are your greatest asset, and embarking on a journey of self-discovery is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. Get curious about who you really are, what matters most to you, and how you want to show up in the world. Sadly, many people speak to themselves with criticism, not compassion. This is where working with a mindset coach can help; we often struggle to see our own gifts clearly.
Self-mastery builds resilience, and is an essential habit to build more confidence and meaning
Clarity brings confidence, and confidence brings consistency. Self-mastery builds resilience. And resilience creates freedom. Take small steps and watch as your self-awareness and curiosity expand. Working on yourself and your mindset is the key to future-proofing your life against uncertain times. As you develop your mindset, you start showing up differently—stronger, clearer, and more grounded. It all starts with one essential habit of connection. Connection with yourself, with others and with life. Ultimately, a higher sense of self-worth, value, and what I call GRIT.
