Living in Thailand has opened my eyes to a profoundly different approach to human interaction. Here, strangers smile, acknowledge, and genuinely wish each other well throughout the day. They seem to exude that wonderful word, kindness; the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate.
The common greeting, along with a smile is, “Sawasdee ka.” This word comes from the Sanskrit word “svasti” meaning “well-being,“ “prosperity,” or “blessing.”
Pretty powerful when you think about it that way, isn’t it? Every greeting is a small act of caring and intention. Moreover, the key here is the word intention.
When you Act with Positive Intention your Energy Exudes Kindness and Conscious Thinking
Moreover, it implies you have put some forethought before your action, before the event. The result. Even the smallest gesture has significance, and it brings with it the energy of warmth, genuine interest, and kindness.
This isn’t just cultural politeness, it creates an invisible network of support, as if you care, and are radiating out kindness. Perhaps this is a simple, practical approach to mental health that we’ve somehow forgotten in many of our societies? Yet, when it comes to wanting to improve, achieve, be or do more, cultivating kindness, is a key habit I teach my clients.
There is a Loneliness Epidemic – a Far Cry from Living in a World of Kindness
We’re living in what U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has officially declared a “national loneliness epidemic,” with about half of us experiencing measurable loneliness at any given moment.
The crisis is so severe that social isolation increases the risk of premature death by 29 percent – equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Furthermore, this isn’t just an American problem. The UK appointed the world’s first Minister for Loneliness, followed by Japan in 2021. When governments create cabinet positions to address a social issue, you know we’re facing something unprecedented.
Why are we so Lonely in our Hyper-Connected World?
The answer lies in a fundamental mismatch between our ancient wiring and our modern world. We evolved to connect face-to-face, reading micro-expressions and experiencing the neurochemical responses that come from being truly present with another person.
“Social connection is not just beneficial for our health and well-being – it’s a biological imperative.” – Dr. Susan Pinker (Author, Psychologist, Social Researcher)
Yet, we’ve shifted to a world where much of our “connection” happens through screens – texts instead of conversations, likes instead of hugs, emojis instead of genuine smiles. Kindness seems to evaporate through this more artificial way of connecting.
We’ve traded quality for quantity, depth for speed, and our wellbeing is paying the price. We have a new dis-ease; what I call the Digital Disconnect, one where caring and kindness have taken a back seat.
Why Connection and Kindness Matter
Connection isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s fundamental to human survival. Moreover, in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, love and belonging sit right in the middle, essential before we can achieve our full potential. Positive connections breed kindness and bring with it the energy of caring. Furthermore, Dr. Susan Pinker’s research shows that face-to-face interactions trigger oxytocin release and reduce stress hormones. Additionally, the Harvard Study of Adult Development proves that quality relationships are the strongest predictor of life satisfaction.
The Simple Solution
The beautiful irony is that while governments spend millions addressing loneliness, the medicine is hiding in plain sight: each other. A simple “good morning,” a genuine smile, or random act of kindness, activates the same neural reward pathways as food and water. What a simple act, and a wonderful habit to create.
So, say hello to a stranger this week. Smile at the person serving you at the checkout, or waiting in line. Take time to ask a neighbour or friend how they are doing. Most of all, take time to actually listen, show you care, and ditch your gadgets for a while!
These micro-moments of kindness create ripples of wellbeing that extend far beyond what we can imagine. Made even more powerful, when you do it with a positive intention.
In a world where loneliness has become an epidemic, perhaps the revolution starts with each one of us. A decision to use our mind wisely. From a simple smile or greeting to a stranger could change the trajectory of our wellbeing, help us to feel special, heard and appreciated. Surely this has to be a better cure than pills and visits to the doctors, or increased screen time as people try to find meaning through their gadgets.
Who can you intentionally smile at or greet today?
