Your beliefs have tremendous power over your life. Simply stated a belief is an acceptance that something is true, usually without any proof of its truth. We acquire many of our beliefs in our youth and are now stored as memories in our subconscious mind. Our memories are based on how we interpreted our experiences at that time. Furthermore, our nervous system, through the lens of our beliefs and the emotions we attached to them, influences what we see. We consciously delete, distort or generalise information every second of our lives, taking in information that matches with what we already know as our ‘truth’. Therefore, your beliefs create solid foundations that shape and limit what you let into your conscious awareness. Discovering the keys to transform limiting beliefs is essential for achieving your desired results and fulfilling your potential.
Your thoughts influence your results which is why you must transform your limiting beliefs
If you believe you can do something or believe you can’t, you will probably prove your belief true. Thinking you aren’t good enough to get a new job may result in not applying for it. Believing you aren’t smart enough to make money will limit your income. In the famous words by Henry Ford:
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
A powerful illustration of the power of beliefs is with the placebo effect. A placebo is any treatment prescribed for a condition for which it is physically ineffective. The majority of research has centred on pain relief, also known as placebo analgesia. This is where, for instance, someone is given a sugar pill rather than a headache tablet to reduce the pain of a headache. Research in this field indicates approximately one third of individuals who receive a placebo believe it to be a potent treatment. That is a whopping thirty percent of people who believe the placebo to be effective to their pain.
Certainly a figure to take seriously and one that has massive implications for challenging our limiting beliefs. Furthermore, when you reveal and become aware of your limiting beliefs, you can shift your thinking. Moreover, it is helpful in seeing things differently and allowing new possibilities to open up. Transforming limiting beliefs into new helpful ones can be life changing and an important part of creating a mindset for success or growth mindset.
A frequently held limiting belief is not being good enough
Many of your beliefs are hidden from your awareness. This is because they reside in your subconscious mind, outside your conscious awareness. A desire to change, and a lens of curiosity and kindness is required here. Like a detective who curiously digs deep to find the real truth, adopting this mindset is key to transform your limiting beliefs. Moreover, you have to consciously listen carefully to find them. Remember, it is your background chatter that makes up your life story. Psychiatrist and Harvard Medical School professor John Sharp, in his TEDx talk, says this:
“It’s the story you’ve been telling yourself about who you are and how everything always plays out.”
Beliefs can also be accepted as the norm among communities and societies
Many years before Roger Bannister broke the four minute mile, most people, including his coach didn’t believe it was possible. They thought his heart would explode. However, in a very short time after Roger Bannister broke this milestone and disproved the belief, others followed suit. Today, more than 1450 people have achieved this result. Furthermore, around a year ago, Eliud Kipchoge, a marathon runner, became the first athlete to run a marathon under two hours. His unshakeable belief was a crucial part of his success. Moreover, he cultivated excellent habits. He had a clear plan and schedule and took consistent action. Ultimately, habits are the cornerstone of all success.
“Personally, I don’t believe in limits. My mind was clear. From the first kilometre to the last kilometre, I knew I had it.”
Here is what you can do. Get curious and start to delve deeper into your subconscious mind, the storehouse of all your memories. This is the way to discover and reveal your limiting beliefs. With new realisations, possibilities open up and you start to see things differently. You might even find yourself doing the things you know you should instead of being pulled off course by your habitual stories and because you don’t feel like doing that important task.
Here are a few questions to help you discover how to transform your limiting beliefs
Write your unhelpful or limiting beliefs on a piece of paper and answer the following questions:
- Is this statement 100% for everyone?
- Am I sure it is 100% true?
- What does holding onto this belief do for me?
- And what will the cost be in ten years time as a result of holding on to this belief?
- If I could let go of this belief what would happen?
- What is a new empowering belief I could adopt?
- How will I act with the new belief?
- How do I feel about this new belief
When you have completed the exercise, commit to writing down your new belief on an Intention card. Intentions are powerful as they direct the energy of mind towards what you want. Carry it with you and read it every day until you see the evidence in your life change. If your old belief was, “I don’t have enough money,” change it to “I intend to attract unlimited abundance into my life.” Watch for examples of this, even if it’s only a 10 cent coin you find on the street. Every time you experience proof of this in your life you build your belief and shift your expectation to possibility and abundance. The added bonus here, is when you take time to write out and read your intention you create stronger new neural pathways which help cement in the new belief.
The key is to be consistent until it feels normal and natural and you connect with the message of your intention. As you create a new habit of reading and believing your new statement, watch the magic happen. This is how to transform your limiting beliefs for good easily, expand your limits to what is possible and fulfil your potential. All part of a mindset for success.
