‘No use getting misty eyed, it all screams by so fast’. Mick Jagger
Yes, life does scream by. So why do we tend to put off playing our greatest game to some distant point in the future? Why do we postpone what we could do today, until tomorrow? Why do we let our dream become a forgotten relic? Or, even worse, another burden to think about of another uncompleted task? Why are humans grade A students in the art of procrastination? Yet we know that it would make a massive difference to our success if we just did it now? Are you guilty of procrastination?
Procrastination means to defer action, yet it is a verb which implies action – so it is really the act of deferring another action, which wastes even more energy! When we are procrastinating we are really doing a less important or easier task!
What if you knew, when you complete a task, you will be rewarded? How would that change your results?
According to psychologist Leslie Sherlin, when you complete a task and say the word ‘done’, it has a positive effect on your brain, creating a physiological response in addition to an emotional one. When you are concentrating on a task, the brain’s electrical activity is heightened. But the moment you say ‘done it’, the electrical activity in your brain shifts to one of relaxation.
When the brain is relaxed it is similar to a brain of someone who meditates or practices mindfulness techniques. Serotonin is released which makes you feel satisfied; so you feel good which builds your confidence and momentum for the next task. Hooray – a breakthrough!
Take Small Steps
So, try breaking your big tasks into tiny tasks. Take small steps and every time you complete a task, tick it off, and say the word ‘done’. Your brain will reward you with a shot of serotonin. This means you will feel better and it will be easier to connect with a good feeling. Just enough serotonin to fuel you to take the next step and build momentum.
You might even become a massive action taker and watch your productivity in your business and life skyrocket! If you are still struggling, here is another way to beat procrastination forever.
